Sunrise vs Sunset Photoshoot in Santorini: Which Option Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we receive from our clients is whether it's better to book a sunrise or sunset photoshoot in Santorini. While both options can create beautiful memories, there are some important things to know before choosing the perfect time for your session.

Sunrise Photoshoots in Santorini
Many visitors book a sunrise photoshoot in Santorini hoping to avoid the crowds. After all, waking up early seems like the perfect way to enjoy the island's famous locations before other tourists arrive.
However, the reality may surprise you.
During peak season, Oia's most iconic photo spots start getting busy much earlier than most people expect. By 6:30 AM, photographers, influencers, and tourists are already lining up near the famous Blue Domes and popular viewpoints. As a result, choosing sunrise does not necessarily mean you'll have these locations all to yourself.
Lighting is another important factor to consider.

Early in the morning, the famous Blue Domes of Oia don't receive the beautiful sunlight that many travelers expect after seeing photos on Instagram or Pinterest. The light is often soft and muted, resulting in images that appear less vibrant and colorful. You'll also encounter strong contrasts between bright highlights and deep shadows, which can make photos look very different from the bright, sunlit Santorini images that inspire most visitors.
Of course, we're always happy to arrange a sunrise photoshoot if that's your preference. We simply believe it's important for our clients to have realistic expectations about the final result. Morning photos can be beautiful and atmospheric, but they won't have the same bright colors and direct sunlight that many people associate with Santorini photography.
If your goal is to achieve vibrant, colorful photos with flattering natural light, we usually recommend scheduling your morning photoshoot between 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM.
By this time, both Oia and Imerovigli receive significantly better sunlight, creating brighter colors, more balanced lighting, and the iconic Santorini look that most visitors are hoping for. In general, quality light starts reaching many of Santorini's most photogenic locations around 8:00 AM, making this one of the best time windows for photography.
Sunset Photoshoots in Santorini
Sunset is another popular choice for a Santorini photoshoot, but selecting the right location becomes especially important.
Many people assume that Oia is the best location for a sunset photoshoot in Santorini, but in reality, it isn't always the ideal choice for professional photography.
First, the iconic blue domes are not illuminated by the sunset. Second, as the evening approaches, thousands of visitors make their way to the sunset side of Oia near Old Oia Castle and the famous windmill to watch the sun go down.
As a result, the streets become extremely crowded, making it difficult to move between locations and find clean compositions without people in the background. During peak season, it's not uncommon to find yourself stuck in slow-moving crowds along Oia's narrow pathways, waiting for an opportunity to pass through.

For sunset photoshoots, we often recommend Finikia, Imerovigli, and several carefully selected hidden locations that we share privately with our clients. These spots offer beautiful golden-hour light, a more relaxed atmosphere, and significantly fewer tourists compared to central Oia.
So, Which Is Better?
The answer depends on the style of photos you're looking for.
If you love bright colors, clear skies, and the classic Santorini look that fills Pinterest and Instagram, a morning photoshoot between 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM is often the best choice.
If you prefer warm golden-hour tones and a more romantic atmosphere, a sunset photoshoot in Finikia or Imerovigli can be absolutely stunning.
Ultimately, the perfect Santorini photoshoot depends less on whether you choose sunrise or sunset and more on selecting the right location, the right lighting conditions, and an experienced photographer who understands the island.
We're always happy to listen to your preferences, share our local knowledge, and recommend the best locations and timing for your session to ensure you receive the beautiful Santorini photos you've been dreaming of.
